Model United Nations is a type of experiential learning exercise in which students temporarily assume the role of active stakeholders in the UN system, i.e., a representative of one of the UN's 193 member states. Students gain skills in critical thinking, debating, diplomacy, lobbying, public speaking, and research by simulating the deliberation and decision-making processes inherent in the multilateral framework of the world's only universal organization, the United Nations. Students who participate in MUN become immersed in the roles of countries as they debate various issues of international importance.
Through its Department of International Relations and European Studies, International Burch University is assisting an informal group of students from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina in organizing the first iteration of BiH Model United Nations for both high school and university students, with space for both individual and delegation registration. In this endeavor, the UN Youth Task Force and the Swiss Embassy in BiH. The three-day event, which runs from Friday, January 20 to Sunday, January 22, will bring together around 200 delegates from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, and the world in eight committees at International Burch University to discuss issues of international importance, demonstrate how dialogue can still produce results, and shift the paradigm.
Shifting the paradigm is not only an event goal, but also the moto of BiH MUN, as it represents an informal induction of a new generation of soon-to-be diplomats into the world of multilateral diplomacy. Going above and beyond what is expected of students and, later, diplomats - who are always ambassadors - exemplifies this new generation and sows hope for a new, substantively different tomorrow. The moto also reflects the ability of young, educated people all over the world to work together to create a better future for all.
