On the 3rd of June, Dr.Azamat Akbarov, had a long-awaited meeting with the world-class linguist Professor William Labov in his office in University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA.
Professor Labov was very keen to know about Burch University, its overall education mechanism and students’ preparation for their future careers. He praised the Burch’s efforts to organize international events such as FLTAL conferences and bring diversified multilingual delegates and famous scholars to Sarajevo. He promised to do his best and join 5th FLTAL Conference, which will be the splendiferous and important event for the academic life in B-H and the Europe as well.
William Labov is an American linguist, widely regarded as the founder of the discipline of variations sociolinguistics. He has been described as "an enormously original and influential figure who has created much of the methodology" of sociolinguistics. He is employed as a professor in the linguistics department of the University of Pennsylvania, and pursues research in sociolinguistics, language change, and dialectology.
Professor Labov studied at Harvard (1948), and he took his PhD (1964) at Columbia University. Labov was awarded the 2013 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science by the Franklin Institute with the citation "for establishing the cognitive basis of language variation and change through rigorous analysis of linguistic data, and for the study of non-standard dialects with significant social and cultural implications”.
