60 students of biological sciences participated in the workshop “Protein Analysis”

A four-day workshop called ”Protein Analysis” brought together 60 biological science students from BiH and the region.

The workshop included protein isolation, quantification, SDS Page gel electrophoresis along with reading the results, all to help students become familiar with one of the most important laboratory procedures in molecular biology.

Students learned how to isolate proteins from plant tissue, after which they worked on sample quantification using spectrophotometry to understand the importance of proper sample extraction for gel electrophoresis and SDS-Page analysis. In the end, they were given the opportunity to read the results of their work with the consultations of the workshop instructor.

That such workshops are of particular benefit is confirmed by the students’ reactions: “The workshop enriched my laboratory experience, my knowledge of protein isolation, and my CV. In addition to all of the above, it is important for me to get new acquaintances with people who think similarly as I do, and with whom I can cooperate in the field of science in the future. And doing so, by working together, we can improve science in our area,” said Marko Marković, a student at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade.

The students also expressed their special gratitude for organizing a free workshop, not hiding their desire to organize similar workshops in the future.

“First of all, I want to commend the professionalism of the Burch University staff, and I also want to thank all for the trust in the cooperation that I hope will continue and be a positive example for the initiative of the next similar projects. I am sure that the quality of knowledge gained during this project will serve us in the further education process and greatly enhance our scientific and research engagement, “said Nejira Handžić, a student at the Faculty of Science, University of Sarajevo.

In the end, students were awarded certificates of participation, aware of the importance of the workshop for students, and grateful for their trust, professors from the Department of Genetics and Bioengineering announced that the new workshops will be organized in the summer, with expanded content and even greater capacity.
