Arcadis and Fugro to partner on £52M Amsterdam bridge restoration contract

City of Amsterdam has appointed joint venture of Arcadis and Fugro to a new framework contract to deliver bridge and quay restoration work in the city over the next six years, with an estimated value of €30M (£26M) to each partner.

The framework will undertake renovation of 850 bridges and 2000km of quay walls during the six year period.

The framework follows on from collapse of quay walls in Amsterdam and Utrecht last year. The Dutch Research Council (NWA) has said that a large proportion of the bridges and quay walls in inner cities are in poor condition or even in need of replacement.

The scope of the work to be delivered by Fugro and Arcadis soil investigations and analyses, inspections of the technical condition of objects, conditioning, design, engineering, contracting, supervision of implementation and advice on programming.

The award of the work follows trial use of Fugro’s TotaLite and mobile laser scanning technology for the large-scale monitoring of bridges and quay walls in Amsterdam, which was announced in January. The aim of the project was to monitor and survey structures more quickly and was part of a pilot programme by the NWA to identify new solutions to the challenge around quay wall and bridge condition.
