Construction and engineering contractors and clients who have developed and deployed innovative products and techniques have been given an extra month to enter the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA) flagship category.

Supported by the government’s Infrastructure Projects Authority (IPA), the Industry transformation and innovation champion category will recognise project teams that are paving the way in delivering fast paced change and rapid innovation to benefit both their current work and the wider industry.

Entrants have until 2 July to submit their applications and must be able to demonstrate that they have taken a bold step and successfully delivered on the expected outcomes.

The type of step forward that judges will be looking for in the winner can be typified by the swift innovation delivered by the construction sector in response to the challenges of Covid-19.

Your team may have a transformative solution borne out of the pandemic that is now delivering wider benefits for your project or you may have taken the same approach to delivering digital, productivity or efficiency improvements.

Key criteria:

  • Transformational concept that could be rolled out to other projects
  • Shows how the work was fast tracked through collaboration
  • Quantifiable improvement that delivers advancement rather than incremental change
  • Able to demonstrate successful delivery of innovation

IPA chief executive Nick Smallwood added: “You only have to look at the past year to see the importance of infrastructure and construction to the wellbeing and prosperity of citizens right across the country. During Covid-19, project teams responded to the challenges we faced by collaborating to develop creative solutions and implementing these in true partnership without delay.

“I found this inspiring to see and I firmly believe this demonstrates that by being innovative, collaborative and by harnessing digital solutions, we can fully unleash the potential of the sector. If we carry forward this momentum and continue to modernise, we can create a sustainable and productive sector that can help rebuild and fuel economic recovery across the UK.

“That is why the Infrastructure and Projects Authority is proud to sponsor the Industry Transformation and Innovation Champion Award at the British Construction Industry Awards 2021.”
