Asst. Prof. Dr. Azamat Akbarov, head of English Department at International Burch University (IBU) held “The Word in Different Languages” entitled seminar at International University of Sarajevo (IUS).
Seminar “The Word in Different Languages” delivered by Dr. Azamat Akbarov, Head of the English Department at Burch University, was held at International University of Sarajevo (IUS), on the 26th of October 2011. Students and academic staff of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) attended the lecture at IUS Conference Hall. The given presentation dealt on translation at the international level enriched with examples from Bosnian, French, Russian, Arabic, Turkish and English language as well.
Seminar lasting ninety minutes covered a wide range of content from smallest units of language with meaning, their semantic attributions, and translation of individual words, word restrictions, co-occurrence of compound words, and their specific value through the usage in the system. The presentation was based on interactive communication by means of the questions posed regarding the equivalents and evaluations in different degrees of forcefulness of English words and expressions in their native language.
Focusing on the varying ways of expression in different languages, accents, registers and dialects, Dr. Akbarov exemplified the problems of non-equivalence in translation and suggested practical ways to overcome them.
Concluding the seminar, Dr. Akbarov shared a few moments to introduce his new book Teamwork: Activities for Communication in English and answered positively to the demands of the students getting their copies autographed.
