On 12th of December 2017, the visiting professor at the International Burch University, at the English Language and Literature Department, Melissa Maria Mahmud, held a lecture on varieties of English, more specifically the Malaysian English or ‘Manglish’.
The topic of the lecture was “Malaysian English: A Variety or a Deficiency?” Professor Mahmud began the lecture with an overview of the historical background of her homeland Malaysia and then continued talking about what led to the nativization of English and the development of ‘Manglish’, as well as the complicated reality of how it is used today.
During the lecture, the professor tried to motivate and involve students in discussing this interesting topic, focusing on the other languages they know. She engaged a lively crowd of students to join the discussion regarding the positive and negative aspects of language variety.
At the end of the lecture, the dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities, Assist. Prof. Dr. Senad Bećirović, presented professor Mahmud with a certificate of appreciation, emphasizing the importance of such events for students' academic development.
