H.E. Madam Geeta Narayan, UNICEF Representative in B&H, H.E. Ambassador Drahoslav Štefánek, Head of Council of Europe Office in B&H, and H.E. Mr. Jakub Skalnik, Ambassador of Czech Republic in B&H, were recent guest lecturers for a diplomacy course at the International Burch University, Department of International Relations and European Studies Department.
Mr. Štefánek elaborated on the CoE's mission in B&H and spoke about his diplomatic career at the UN and his experience as the Slovak MFA. Madam Narayan focused on her diplomatic career at the Canadian MFA and close to two decades with the UN. Mr. Skalnik talked about his political career as Mayor in Polička and his transition to diplomacy within the Czech MFA including anecdotes comparing his experiences in the US and the Netherlands with B&H. IRES students were interested to know more about the key obstacles and expectations of a diplomatic career including the personal toll as well as professional rewards. They also asked about the implementation of ECHR rulings in B&H and the diplomatic community’s relationship with local institutions.
