Panel Discussion on Cosmopolitanism in The EU at BURCH University

The Department for International Relations and European Studies at the International Burch University, in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in B&H, organized a panel discussion on the topic of cosmopolitanism in the EU. Two guest lecturers Dr. Valida Repovac-Nikšić (University of Sarajevo) and Dr. Ciprian Nitu (University of Timisoara) spoke about the contributions of cosmopolitanism in the development of EU integration theories, as well as in the examination of current socio-political challenges in the Union. The event was attended by numerous students and professors from Burch University, and the director of FES in B&H, Marius Müller-Hennig.

"Today, at the International Burch University, to my colleagues and students I presented the most relevant work - part of my doctoral project, and the importance of cosmopolitanism, not only as a philosophical concept and category but as something that should begin to live in practice within the European Union. However, cosmopolitan principles and norms are something that makes the basis of life in the EU and in the developed countries of the world. Within students, I want to see and recognize the critical attitude even when it comes to the critical attitude towards the EU. I direct their attention to the problems they need to look at from different perspectives and encourage them to always think about the current topics. When it comes to the EU, we always talk about its positive sides, but also about those less positive aspects of this concept. Nevertheless, we most often conclude that for our country, the concept of the EU may be the best way, regardless of the more difficult circumstances we will encounter on this path, "said Dr. Valida Repovac - Nikšić, from the University of Sarajevo.

"The topic we have dealt with today is cosmopolitanism, which is nothing but political theory, and what I have exposed students to is the concept of the EU that is confronted with the trend of cosmopolitanism. What is the very essence of cosmopolitanism is being that all people are equal, moral, and ethical. However, the topic was just the reason to talk more to the International BURCH University students, to discuss and exchange positive opinions, but also the experiences they have", said Dr. Ciprian Nitu, from the West University of Timisoara.

Prof. Dr. Jasmin Hasić, Head of International Relations and European Studies at the International Burch University, emphasized that guest lectures by guest professors and internationally recognized experts are already established a practice at our University which helps students to learn more about the practical aspects of the application theory they study during the studies. Professor Hasić added that our University will host numerous representatives of the diplomatic corps and the International community in B&H as well as other visiting professors from the Netherlands, Spain, the United States and other countries in the coming weeks and months.
