About

The Hardware Engineering research group encompasses research on computer systems engineering and associated modeling, design, simulation and verification technologies. This is a multi-disciplinary group of academics, students with varying interest from electrical and electronics engineering, computer science and mathematical sciences.

Our research interests includes but are not limited to:

  • Design and modeling of hardware systems and architectures and the verification of such systems.
  • Use and possible development of specialized simulation techniques.
  • Design, development and testing of embedded microelectronics systems with varying specializations.

    Project Framework for Embedded Systems using PIC Microcontrollers

    Supported by: International Burch University
    Project lasted three months, concluded by setting up the environment for serial programming of any PIC microcontroller and was the base for the next Microcontroller based projects.

    Project Name:
    Smart Control of Growth Chamber

    Supported by: International Burch University
    Based on requirements stated for growth chamber design, a control system is developed in a microelectronic framework. Multiple sensor types are combined with a control algorithm in order to provide a fully controlled environment. The final phase of the project is installing the system in the real growth chamber and assessing its performance.

    Project Name:
    Hardware Framework for Network Security and Machine Learning Algorithms
    Supported by: International Burch University
    The first task for this project will be focused on setting up a hardware framework for the research and development of network security and machine learning algorithms. This includes setting up the FPGA based development platforms and the associated software tools and scripts for the synthesis, verification and testing of such algorithms.

    Novel cascade control algorithms testing on the FESTO Compact Workstation

    Supported by: International Burch University
    Identification of the FESTO compact workstation control loops and testing the novel cascade control algorithms on the real plant and the model, together with theoretical justification for the novel tuning method.

    Project Name:
    Model Predictive Control for heating of the Smart Growth Chamber

    Supported by: International Burch University
    Identification and modeling of the smart growth chamber heating environment and application of MPC for its control, followed by multiparameter control of the whole SGC environment.

    Hardware and software setup for IBU HAM

    Supported by: International Burch University
    Development of custom FPGA-based USRP and setup of an Echolink node with Svxlink server.
