Elma Iković, student of the Department of Digital Communications and Public Relations participated in masterclass "Making Documentaries with a Smartphone" led by a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Damir Šogolj at AJB DOC last year, which resulted in filming the documentary „We are Guilty Too”. Her documentary has been declared the best at last year's training and was one of three films shown at this year's AJB DOC in the SMART Doc category.
The SMART Doc program was created to demonstrate the possibilities of smartphones in producing documentaries, and participants learn the first steps of production through a training with professionals.
At fifth edition of the AJB DOC Elma Iković presented her documentary “We are Guilty Too”, which examines climate change and our role in it. Elma wanted to demonstrate that we are all guilty of negligence and denial, and that we all play a role in the negative effects on the environment.
„This was a memorable experience, that I will forever treasure. Since last year, there has been a lot of work and dedication, a lot of things I've learned along the way, and a lot of wonderful people I've had the opportunity to work with. I think that having had the chance to be a part of this year's SMART Doc will provide me with new insights and opportunities because it is only the first significant step in my future film career. For me, the post-production process has been my favorite because that is where I got to shape my story into what people get to see. At the same time, it was the most intense or even challenging part, as this was the first project of this magnitude for me. Nevertheless, everything turned out how I envisioned it initially. I was very lucky to have had amazing people by my side, who supported me from day one. I believe this project will always be special for me, for many reasons. Mainly because I wanted to use this film to start a much-needed conversation about climate change and its undeniable effects on our environment. This has definitely been a test for me in many ways. Not only did I learn a lot about the process of filmmaking, but about myself. I can certainly see my future becoming more centered around film, and I look forward to seeing where it takes me.“, shared Elma.
We congratulate Elma on this outstanding achievement and are confident that she will continue to advance and become a well-known filmmaker.
