Key A1 bridge survey work rescheduled due to clash with roadworks

Highways England has been forced to reschedule survey work on the A1 due to clashes with roadworks in the area.

Highways England had planned to carry out key survey work on the River Coquet Bridge between Burgham and Felton earlier this month.

The survey is needed to develop the detailed design for the improvements to the A1 between Morpeth and Ellingham, which is due to start in 2022

However, Highways England have announced that they “were unable to carry out the previously planned survey works at the River Coquet Bridge […] due to activities on the wider road network that were outside our control”.

A Highways England spokesperson confirmed that the “activities” relate to “overnight roadworks nearby as part of the A1 Scotswood to North Brunton improvement”.

A Highways England statement adds: “This work involves accessing the underside of the bridge using ropes and therefore we must remove all traffic to carry out this work safely. The diversion route will take traffic off the A1 using the Peth, crossing the River Coquet and then using Main Street.”

Highways England said the work was required to see how the structure over the River Coquet in Northumberland was behaving during different temperatures and weather patterns.

On 5 July, Highways England reached the end of the Development Consent Order examination period.

The Examination Authority will now write its report and make a recommendation to the transport secretary with a decision expected in January 2022.
