Podcast | Fatal Miami condo collapse explored

A special edition of The Engineers Collective is out now, with a focus on the fatal collapse of the 12-storey Champlain Towers in Florida, USA.

Editor of NCE Claire Smith is joined by head of content and engagement Rob Horgan and reporter Catherine Kennedy to discuss the tragic collapse which has claimed the lives of at least 90 people.

The trio explore the possible causes of the collapse as well as looking back at previous engineering reports into the poor state of the building in the years leading up to the disaster.

Former NCE editor Ty Byrd also joins the podcast, to discuss the Ronan Point disaster in the UK in 1968.

The progressive collapse at Champlain Towers South has led to many people drawing parallels  between this incident and the Ronan Point collapse in the UK in 1968.

Byrd – who reported on the Ronan Point disaster at the time of the tragedy – explains how the progressive collapse led to an overhaul in the UK’s construction industry to ensure such an event never happens again.
