On 27th of March 2014 Professor Victoria Murphy from Oxford University held two seminars, morning session “The Role of Vocabulary Knowledge in Developing Literacy Skills for Minority Language Learners“ and afternoon session „Cross linguistic Influence in Young L2 Learners“, for all parties interested in applied linguistics and second language acquisition. Many teachers from primary and high schools from Sarajevo and Zenica region participated the seminars, together with the staff and students of International Burch University, and other guests.
Firstly, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azamat Akbarov held a short introduction about rich experience of distinguished scholar Professor Victoria Murphy, and later, professor Murphy started her lecture with short notes about her educational background in psychology and linguistics.
During her two lectures, professor Murphy talked about various researches focused on young learners of language in primary school with EAL (minority language learners) as a focus group, and the topic of their vocabulary. Explaining the results of few studies undertaken by herself and her students, and other researcher, Murphy explained that this group in comparison to native speakers shows worse academic achievement through the years of studies.
Second part of the seminar was also the topic of vocabulary in language acquisition, which was shown also through studies and examples of idioms in English language. Beside other details, Murphy underlined importance of bilingualism as an additional value for the overall success of individuals.
At the end of the lecture Professor Victoria Murphy was awarded Appreciation letter on behalf of the International Burch University.
