International Burch University Strengthens Awareness on Gender Equality through the UNIGEM Consortium
On May 16, 2024, International Burch University, as part of the UNIGEM consortium, continued its efforts to promote awareness on gender equality. A workshop titled "Gender Equality and Bosnia and Herzegovina's International Obligations in the Context of EU Integration" was conducted for students and staff.
The workshop was led by Professor Lejla Ramić-Mesihović, Head of the Department of International Relations and European Studies at Burch University. The session saw active participation from students, who showed great interest in the topic.
During the workshop, the role and content of international documents concerning gender equality were thoroughly examined, with a particular focus on the Istanbul Convention. Discussions revolved around how these documents aim to protect and promote women's rights and the various obligations they impose on signatory states. The participants also delved into the readiness of society to embrace gender equality, exploring both the progress made and the challenges that remain. The importance of aligning Bosnia and Herzegovina's policies with European Union standards was emphasized, highlighting the country's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations. This comprehensive exploration aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the legal and societal frameworks that support gender equality, fostering a more informed and proactive approach to this crucial issue.
UNIGEM is a consortium of 20 universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, coordinated by the TPO Foundation from Sarajevo and supported by the UK Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts by International Burch University to foster a deeper understanding and commitment to gender equality among its academic community.
